Kantilena’s debut single X'Ubidù?! was released over the Internet on the 31st of January 2012 through their Facebook page.
The band was set up in 2009 by Alessandro Lia (piano / vocals / percussion), Drinu Camilleri (guitar / vocals / percussion) and James Baldacchino (violin / double-bass / percussion) in an attempt to bring together their shared interest in music and the Maltese language, reflected also by their choice of name.
In 2011 Debbie Axisa Farrell and Bertu Grima joined the band on backing vocals on drums respectively, but the drummer was soon replaced by Manuel Pulis. Albert Garzia joined on accordion in 2012.

Among their influences Kantilena cite traditional Maltese music and folklore, as well as artists like New Cuorey, Tom Waits, Beirut, Nick Drake, Greg Laswell, Gogol Bordello, Anouar Brahem, and Luigi Tenco.
