It never rains but it pours! Further to the Marsaxlokk Rock Festival, this weekend also happens to be that time of year when local biker club Rebel Riders stages its 2-day annual Rebelfest gathering. Now in its third year, Rebelfest has proved a popular attraction with the local rock crowd, particularly those with a love for outdoor events. The event evolved from the biker club’s annual ‘Kill the Pig’ camp into a weekend of music, food and sport.

This year’s event, which will be held at the Buskett Roadhouse, will in fact open around 7pm on Friday August 24 with a mixture of reggae and tribal music, peaking with a live performance by none other than Tribali, incidentally their last performance for this year. That same evening, there will also be a bike show. On Saturday, the evening will kick off at 7pm with a Pro Boxing tournament, followed by two of the best rock bands in Malta, Forsaken and Norm Rejection! The bike show will enter its judging stage, after which there will be the bikers’ traditional Pork Roast feast and rock music till late. Tickets are for sale at Aw Tribu of Zabbar Road, Fgura and from Wild Ones Rock Bar in Barnaba Street, Bugibba for the price of LM 3.50 per day or LM 5.50 for a 2-day pass.

“If your ears ain't ringing at the end of the show....it wasn’t loud enough!” This is how most rock festivals strut their stuff for rock fans to gather round! It is also how a certain Chris Grillo had commented about a particular rock festival that took place last year in the south of the island. That festival was the Marsaxlokk Rock Festival, and this weekend, precisely Saturday August 25, this fishing village will once again host the third edition of this much-anticipated rock event.

As in previous editions, the organization has been ably handled by Mario Cassar with the support of the Marsaxlokk Local Council, the event’s official sponsor. In view of the lack of such events in Malta, the council’s initiative is to be strongly commended and hopefully emulated by other localities. As usual, entrance to the event will be free; another point that should be applauded, particularly since there will be not one, but four bands performing on the night. These are B.N.I., who have recently returned from a successful UK festival appearance; X-Vandals, Angelcrypt and last but not least, Stillborn, who will be promoting their soon-to-be-released debut CD album. As with last year’s edition, this year’s Marsaxlokk Rock Festival promises an evening of sturdy punk rock and metal performed by some of the island’s top acts in their respective genres!
“The true future of extreme metal has just been born in Malta and it is called Slit!” This is what French webzine Metal Chroniques had to say about local noisemongers Slit, so it’s no wonder really that the band will be off to France in June for a tour that includes a performance at the notorious Hellfest, as part of a line-up that includes Korn, Slayer, Machinehead, Megadeth, Type O Negative, Within Temptation and Dream Theater. The tour will also include dates in Switzerland and Belgium, a sure sign of just how big this band has become in recent years. The band, who were also featured in this month’s edition of renowned music mag Metal Hammer will also be playing a few local gigs in the run-up to the tour, namely April 21 at Poxx Bar with Recoil, June 2 at Poxx bar with Frenzy Mono and June 15 at Remedy with new band Dying Signals.
New name, new project but certainly no novices at the game - that could be one way of describing Da Sixth! Featuring a three-strong core line-up, Sixth Simfoni is essentially Pen_Demonium, D Legacy and Simon Vella. The first two have long been part of the local hiphop scene, fronting IQ and Sanitarium respectively, while multi-instrumentalist Vella has over the years established himself as one of Malta’s most versatile musicians, thanks largely to his polished violin playing and his extraordinary knack of crossing over into various genres! Launched a couple of weeks ago with a live performance at Luxol, Sixth Simfoni’s self-titled EP is a slicker, but not subdued, expression of their spirited onstage presentation.

It kicks in with an elegant violin melody and features several guest artists, mostly all drafted to contribute a soulful side to Da Sixth’s rap element. The 8 cuts on offer also reflect broader musical inclinations, especially on the operatic tilt of Breakthru and Strade, again embossed with Vella’s animated violin playing as much as with Rachel Fabri and Nick Agius Darmanin’s vocals. Baresine brings out Momma’s emotive vein strongly and Claire Cordina’s subtle but effective chorus completes Spread Your Wings. Underneath it all, Vella, along with producer Niki Gravino, have laid out rhythmic grooves and elaborate arrangements that blend and flow smoothly for Pen_Demonium and D Legacy’s imposing rap. St Passive pretty much represents Da Sixth’s playing field, with both rappers playing off each other in their anti-establishment rant. Closer Hold On is not just a bonus track, it also highlights a sharp aptitude for reworking a cool sample into an altogether new tune! Expect to hear more from Da Sixth!

Three years ago, Hooligan launched himself locally with his much talked-about Originali Bhali debut. Though considered a milestone in Maltese music because if its integration of the Maltese language with the hip-hop genre, there was room for improvement, and Hooligan seems to have taken note of all the criticism while working on his sophomore offering. From the get-go, it is obvious that this time around, more detail has been given to presentation and more importantly, content, with Hooligan applying himself to singing (erm..rapping, actually!) in English as well as in Maltese.

In the process, Hooligan has absorbed several factors into his music, as much from his live performances as from his (old and) new influences and his musical collaborations. The result is evident in practically every one of this record’s 50 minutes. His opening salvo on the title track - bubbling with traditional hip-hop machismo – is highly entertaining, but the album’s Maltese language highlights have to be the lyrically potent 8 Darbiet (Remix) and the evocative Meta l-Qanpiena Ddoqq. Both songs carry strong messages and musically, they also portray the depth of Hooligan’s musical vision and resilience. Another outstanding number is the duet with Julie Zahra, Hoolistyle, which replaces the raw with the refined; a rare venture into R’nB territory. A special mention has to go to Music, which features Pen_Demonium, Dizzy D and Sick, easily among Malta’s rap royalty. A highly volatile number, Music’s vibrant ring may well be the way forward for this talented artist if he decides to explore opportunities beyond our island’s confines!

Intimate musical performances are something I find quite alluring; and it doesn’t get any more intimate than The Music Room at St James Cavalier. This cosy venue, which only takes a small audience at a time, was the stage for Violin’s latest event, Invitation. The largely acoustic show, held over three nights at the end of last month, presented a variety of musical styles performed by some of Malta’s most promising young talent.

Based around the fulcrum of violinist Simon Vella, bassist Chris Porter, drummer Gordon Bonello, pianist Samuel Hayman and a rotating guest list, the performance was split into two parts, avoiding the use of microphones as much as possible to preserve the warm ambiance between performer and audience. The first half, intended to have more of a ‘pop’ orientation, actually started with Hayman’s rendition of jazz standard My Funny Valentine. Next up was guitarist Keith Muscat, who was joined by Vella and Porter for a 5-song set that included acoustic renditions of Stairway to Heaven, Avril Lavigne’s Nobody’s Home and The Police classic, Roxanne, the latter two featuring an impressive Raquela Dalli Gonzi on vocals. Her best moment was however to come later, when she sang an inspired version of Christina Aguilera’s latest hit, Hurt. Another prominent guest in the first half was 17-year old Carlo Muscat, an up-and-coming sax player whose performance accompanying Hayman on the 1954 jazz classic, Misty was truly wonderful!

The second half was the jazzy part, slipping in with an instrumental four-track set (Cantaloupe Island, Blue Bossa, Invitation and 500 Miles High) that highlighted the dynamism of the quartet onstage. Vocalist Daniela Grech then joined the boys for a trio of Latin-tinged lounge classics, namely The Look of Love, Mas Que Nada and Besame Mucho. Ms Grech has a soothing voice simply made for this kind of music, but she did lack the stage presence to complement the Latin groove. The boys took over once more to round off the night with four more jazz instrumentals (including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez – brilliant!) an extended medley for an encore that characterized not only an eclectic musical taste but an incredible knack for improvisation. Now I’m still not sure if more than one drum solo per show was necessary, but the overall result was outstanding nonetheless. A special mention has to go to Samuel Hayman - a truly talented pianist with a good sense of humour - and Simon Vella, whose violin-playing – whether it is classical, contemporary, rock or pop - is simply too engaging to resist!

Last but not least, I have to congratulate the organisers, whose initiative made all the above possible, offering us all a most entertaining evening packed with genuine talent and great music!
Ahead of the upcoming live concert by Swiss hard rockers Krokus in Valletta on 25 November, I copped a listen to the band’s latest album, Hellraiser, primarily to get an earful of what they are up to these days but also to prepare myself for their long-awaited Malta performance.

While there’s no question about the loyalty of their global fanbase, locally, the band commands a more particular respect, a lot of it down to their rock ‘n’ roll quotient but a good portion of it because we, the Maltese hold the band’s singer Marc Storace in high esteem! And rightfully so too because in all the years that Malta has had a rock scene, he is the only local artist to make it on a global scale. Now, for Marc and Malta’s rock fans alike, ‘the dream’ is finally coming true! In a way, we are lucky to get this chance at all, as Marc had left Krokus a few years back to pursue other projects. It is thanks to one of these projects, involving bass player Tony Castell that Marc again teamed up with guitarist Fernando Von Arb in 2001. The chemistry, as the cliché goes, was still there and Krokus mounted a comeback that peaked with the release of the ‘Rock the Block’ album, which entered the Swiss charts at No.1 before it was actually released!

With Von Arb having to quit due to a severe wrist injury last year, following up Rock The Block wasn’t going to be easy. In fact, the line-up on Hellrasier features a few new faces (including two guitarists to replace Von Arb), but that aside, the album lives up to expectations, with Marc clearly still at the top of his game and the rock still as powerful and punchy as ever. There are no surprises as far as style goes - the old school metal blueprint is still the order of the day. Then again all Marc ever wanted to do was rock, and Hellraiser packs 55 full minutes of it, balancing the party rock of the title track and closer Rocks Off against the radio-friendly AOR of Angel of My Dreams and Love Will Survive, the only exception being the pummelling grinder Spirit of the Night around the halfway mark. Fifteen studio albums and three decades down the line, Krokus are still banging out some of the best old school rock around. And while their commercial peak came long before the new millennium kicked in, Hellraiser is a sure sign that rock ’n roll never dies – it just grows stronger!

Krokus will be performing at the Old Power Station at the Valletta Waterfront on Saturday 25 November. Local bands Fire and Boys Next Door will be supporting. Tickets are available from all Exotique outlets, Simon’s Pub (Sliema), Rookie’s (Bugibba), Knight Music (Hamrun), Olimpus Music (Gzira), Elements Rock Café (Paceville), Wave Music (Floriana), Ministry of Music (B’Kara), Sunshine Bar (Gozo) or online at www.chooseaticket.com. Live music enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the three-day Battle of the Bands that will be taking place this weekend - Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October in the Trade Fair Grounds in Naxxar, during the second edition of the Oktoberfest being organized by PRES (Malta).

The event, powered by Go Mobile, will involve live performances from no less than 11 bands split into two groups, the first batch performing on Friday and the second on Saturday, with six bands qualifying for the final night on Sunday. Each band’s performance will be voted upon by a panel of three judges – all with great experience and a proven track record in the music field, but the public will also have its say, as 30% of the total vote will be decided by the crowd present on the night through a drinks-for-tokens system.

The full list of participating bands is Access To, Cable 35, Cell 109, Fire, Frenzy Mono, Lynn Faure & Band, Mindstate, Pitch 99, Retrophytes, The Myth and White Crimson. All of these bands will be doing their utmost to claim one of the three top prizes, possibly the best ever prizes ever offered in a local competition of its kind. The bands placing first, second and third will in fact not only get a token trophy, but more importantly the incredible opportunity to perform at the renowned Matthew Street Festival in Liverpool next year plus a 10-hour recording package at Temple Studios. In addition, the band placing first will also be given an opportunity to audition for the Liverpool Summer Pops Festival 2007, an established annual international music event that runs for over three weeks and features some of the world’s biggest pop and rock stars.

The Battle of the Bands, powered by Go Mobile, is being organized by PRES (Malta) with the collaboration of the Liverpool 08 Capital of Culture campaign. Capital Radio 88.7FM is the official station for the event.
After spending much of the past year locked away in the studio, Maltese rock band Winter Moods is back with a brand new song, Lonely Vegas. The radio single, which was launched on the local airwaves last week, is being released ahead of the band’s upcoming studio album Ordinary Men, which should be out later this month. In a statement, frontman Ivan Grech said that the new album – their fourth to date - “is a reflection of us; what we go through every day, and what we have experienced together as a band during the past 20 years”.

Yes – that’s right – 20 years! Two decades down the road from that fateful day in 1986 when bassist Joseph Rizzo and lead guitarist Steve Caruana Smith first got the idea to form the band, eventually recruiting Ivan to take care of the vocal duties. You can’t not agree that it is quite a long time for a band to stick together but as Ivan himself admits, “Few bands stay together this long, but of course there have been ups and downs”. And you can be sure there will be many more, but for the moment, the band is quite excited about their latest accomplishment. Asked about the new album, Ivan simply replied “It is made up of the Winter Moods you know, but there will be some interesting new sounds as well”.
Two albums in the space of eight years may seem a bit sparse in terms of output to some, but in Brian Vassallo’s world, quality and essence have always been at the helm of each and every piece of work he does. And if you’re thinking you’ve heard of Vassallo somewhere or other, think back to 1998, when he released Beyond. The album has been critically acclaimed both locally and abroad, mainly for its electronically constructed cosmic ambience, and continues to attract a variety of audiences – from New Age to Chill-out to Ambient. Incidentally, Vassallo was also among the first Maltese musicians to establish an online presence with a sizeable foreign following, and it is the feedback he has received through the internet that has inspired and motivated the release of flashback, his second album.

When compared to Beyond’s cushioned layers of soaring digital sound, Flashback is however, something a mixed bag. For his second outing, Vassallo, a big Jean-Michel Jarre fan by his own admission, has opted to alter his vision beyond the ethereal and infuse more rhythm in his music. The result, somewhat inevitably, bears several references to the French electronic wizard’s style (particularly opening track Senses) but the presence of more prominent beats is more akin to Orbital’s epic electronica than Jarre’s soundscapes. More importantly, however, Vassallo has successfully preserved his own timbre by balancing the various aspects of his new record into one eclectic yet cohesive electronic expedition that should increase both his profile and following significantly.

Wednesday 13 Sep 2006 (Michael Bugeja - The Malta Independent)

Fresh-faced, brand new to the local scene and slipping in under the radar is one Ellena George, a twenty-something singer, for whom singing has been on the cards since childhood. Like most Maltese musicians, she juggles her day job with her passion for music, and after years of hard work, doubts and dreams, she has finally released her debut single, Breakaway.

Written and recorded with Toby, one of Malta’s leading DJ/producers and an artist in his own right, the song reels off an electro-lite rhythm that holds it pace steadily to allow Ellena’s sharp vocals the space to ease out a gentle yet catchy vocal hook. The lyrics are simple and to the point, outlining an optimistic sense of expression and laced with a clear-cut pop sensibility.

By her own admission, Ellena aims to share a piece of herself through her music, and to an extent, the new single reflects a degree of personal experience, as she feels that this adds to the authenticity and spirit of the music. With Breakaway, the theme in hand is essentially the pursuit of dreams, and ultimately their realization through determination and self-belief. Idealistic to say the least, but there’s no harm in trying, and besides it’s a pretty decent philosophy to live by, isn’t it? With Breakaway, Ellena George has got off to a pretty good start, here’s to more of the same!
An event with no name, but loads of great tunes this weekend at Buskett Roadhouse. House music and electronica need no introduction to the clubbing masses, with both enjoying a high degree of popularity on the island. Well outside the commercial glint of mainstream Paceville, yet packing enough musical punch to still draw the crowds, the upcoming event at Buskett Roadhouse this Saturday 19 August should provide a welcome retreat for genuine fans of both genres. The untitled event should prove to be a success not only because of the scheduled DJ line-up, but especially because it has been put together by members of the House of Misfits and Sonic Mecca - both organizations with a reputation for great talent and even greater taste! And when the music’s good and grooving, who needs a name for an event anyway?

The event will feature two rooms - a House garden and the Electronic Circuit – with both rooms focusing on presenting a deeper taste of modern dancefloor sounds that bring out the essence of their genre without subscribing to any mainstream persuasion. The House Garden will feature sets by Deep Worship (aka Stefan Popovic) from Montenegro, as well as sets by seasoned local lads Owen Jay, Woody Aki and Ssoker. The Electronic Circuit, on the other hand, will feature sets from the veteran Brian James and Katya along with live PA’s from Duo Blank and Malta’s latest club sensation, the notorious Danjeli. The combination of a quaint open-air venue and such an impressive DJ line-up, this event is surely not to be missed by those who like their dance music to be authentic, passionate and exciting! Doors open at 11pm. Tickets are available from Juuls Café (Paceville), Fused (Qormi) or by calling the hotline 99290626.

Sunday 01 November 2009 (Michael Bugeja - The Sunday Times of Malta)

Young Maltese pianist Clifford Borg has had a year to remember. He may have started it badly nursing a leg injury, but he more than made up with his remarkable Origin CD launch performance at St James Cavalier last May and just last month, his original composition Emergence won the Best Music for Digital Film Award at the Swan Lake Moving Image and Movie Awards, an international event organised by SL:MIMA to honour the creation of stimulating visual imagery set to the new age piano music genre. Borg spoke to us about Emergence, the prize it won and his current activities.

Q. It’s been an eventful year for you; a new album and now an international award. You must be feeling pretty elated...
It has been rather eventful, hasn’t it? I released my second album Origin locally and internationally, namely via online music store CDbaby.com. I also got to perform at the Manoel Theatre’s Sala Isouard during the recent Notte Bianca and I played in Pozzallo, Sicily too. I’m particularly happy because so far I had never won any award, so this international award has been quite a pleasant gift. Of course, I would still like to receive an award in my own country one day, but I’m still young and I have much more music to offer, so that can still happen.

Q. You didn’t attend the awards ceremony though…
I was hoping to attend the ceremony, which took place in Mittweida (Germany) on October 20, but unfortunately I didn’t get much support by way of sponsorship when I sent a request to the local authorities concerned. On a brighter note, I’m still quite chuffed about the award, especially because the jury panel included Emmy-award winning American composer Kurt Bestor.

Q. How did you get to collaborate with the director Markus Mayr?
Last year I sustained a leg injury, which gave me a lot of time to work on boosting my internet profile. I came upon this website called www.newagepiano.net and registered myself on it. Not long after that, I started receiving information about the site’s network and activities, which included the annual Swan Lake Moving Image and Movie Awards (SL:MIMA - www.swan-lake-award.org). I uploaded my piano piece Emergence (from the Origin album) after which Markus Mayr got in touch asking me if I was interested in collaborating with him. I immediately accepted, and he went on to produce the winning video. I had no idea what to expect but I’m very pleased with the clip.

Q. A little insight into the theme of the film...
The film is a blend of three separate colour themes revolving around the main character, a chap named Paul, who is busy with a new fantastic career-job. The ‘full colour’ scenes portray Paul’s ‘real life’ away from the computers, online social networks, electronic gadgets and so on. This segment of his life is brightly coloured and looks brilliant to his friends and his girlfriend. The scenes with dim colours reflect those moments when Paul is pretending ot be happy with his life, trying to achieve gratification from his achievements. Then there are the ‘black and white’ scenes. These reflect Paul’s innermost emotions, the place deep down where he cannot hide the fact that he is unhappy. Annette (his girlfriend) discovers he has been lying and pretending to be happy over the phone and argues with him that his work has taken over his life, leaving him no time to share with other people.

The video is very realistic, because it reflects an unfortunate truth in today’s day and age where careers and the internet seem to have taken precedence over other, more important things that life has to offer, such as relationships and friendships. It is a reflection of the overbearing materialistic streak that seems to have ingrained itself in ‘modern life’.

Q. How has the album been received overall?
So far, I’m pleased to say that it has been very well-received by the public and by the music critics too. Furthermore, music from Origin is going to be used on a DVD release by the German Company Cascade Medien. The documentary about European gardens will be released worldwide, also in the Blu-Ray format.

Q. You’ve often performed abroad and you’re also planning new gigs soon…
Yes, it is not the first time that I have played abroad. To date I have performed in London, Paris, Germany, Egypt, Brussels, Amsterdam and Sicily. I do have other gigs coming up and I’m presently engaged with the Bilateral Embassy of Malta in Brussels, where I am due to perform during an exclusive Maltese evening at the Brussels Hilton next month.

I should also be performing at St James’ Church in Piccadilly, London either in December or January. The occasion will be the launch of an exhibition about St John’s Co-Cathedral by French artist Laurent Muller and is being organised by the Malta Tourism Authority and the Malta High Commission in London.

Q. What have you been working on lately…new music, other projects?
I’m quite busy working on a new website as well as promoting my music online and sending out the album to various industry contacts. Musically, I’m currently engrossed in my third album, which will be a crossover of various styles. I am also working with Hungarian video director Thomas Popovic, who will be producing video clips to accompany my music. He has already started working on Drifted, my first album.
Local rock band The Myth has just released a new single, Sworn Independent. Pitching it with a touch of humour on their MySpace bulletin to those out there who are still single, the new song is an upbeat rock tune in the vein of Primal Scream and Black Crowes’s hand-me-down Stones groove. Formed in 1990, The Myth is one of Malta’s longest standing bands still in existence. The band performs live regularly and in the past has supported international acts such as Status Quo, Smokie and the UK's Official Eagles Tribute Band.

cleanup

Consisting of songwriters Charles J. Attard and Frank Buhagiar along with percussionist Eugene Bajada and bass player Marvic Vella, Divine Sinners hail from the island of Gozo. Divine Sinners always did it themselves – writing, playing, singing and producing their own material. Never really caring for the rules of the game, they recorded three CDs of original songs in a studio before even playing their first live gig.

Divine Sinners came into being when Charles was at a loss what music to use for a stage comedy he wrote and was also directing, so he asked a friend to order a copy of Anton Karas’ soundtrack CD of Carol Reed’s masterpiece, “The Third Man”. When four days before the play’s performance, it was discovered that no one ordered the CD, Charles simply took matters into his own hands and wrote a funny little ditty himself and asked his friend Frank to sing it.

Since the song was better received than the play itself, Charles and Frank decided to keep meeting up, co-writing and playing their own songs. It was round this time that they started going into a local Gozitan studio where they ended up recording their original material. The albums "Laringitis" (2005), "Nowadays" (2007) and "Piece o’ Cake" (2009) were recorded around this time. These albums can be acquired by contacting them on their facebook page.

Divine Sinners (the name is inspired by Dante’s La Divina Commedia which neither Charles nor Frank have actually read) started doing live gigs as an acoustic duo during the summer of 2009, playing the obligatory cover versions along with their original compositions. The Divine Sinners sound is something which they like to describe as “folk-punk” blending the charming soothing sounds of traditional folk blues music along with the raw aggressive DIY simplicity of punk rock and grunge channeling it through pop thus creating their own unique sound.

In December 2009, they launched their youtube channel on the internet. Done on a whim, they uploaded their original Christmas tune “Another Lonely Christmas” set to a funny video. Filmed during a December evening of wine drinking with friends at Frank’s own garage (the wine drunk was actually made by Frank himself), “Another Lonely Christmas” is a funny cheap little music video set in a bar where a mad bouncer seems intent on kicking everyone out of the bar, most of the time for no reason at all! While the video might be funny, the song described (not without a pinch of salt) the pain of spending a Christmas all depressed and alone. A surreal moment in Divine Sinners’ gigs is when sometimes this song is requested and played no matter what time of year it is. A Rock Night in August 2010 ended with a whole nightclub singing “Yeah, Hooray, it’s Christmas time”‘‘‘.
November 2010 saw the addition of Eugene Bajada on percussion while Marvic Vella joined them on bass guitar in 2011. Eugene (aka the Cajon of Chaos) is well known around Gozo for his unique playing on a cajon built by himself and also as the founder of the Gozo Drum Tribe which is a local drumming community based in Gozo. With his mop-top hair and left-handed bass playing, Marvic is the “Paul McCartney” of the band. Now a quartet, the Divine Sinners sound is finally full. Filmed in a barn and starring special guest, Crescent the Goat, "Cactus Rose" is the first video of Divine Sinners as a foursome.

In 2011, Divine Sinners were asked by stage director George Mizzi to write original songs for the Gozo Creative Theatre production of Frank Wedekind’s controversial teen coming of age tale Spring's Awakening. Songs such as "Growing Up is Such a Drag", "Doctor, Doctor", "Bye, Bye, Napoleon" and "Spanking the Monkey" were written for this production which was staged on 26th and 27th November 2011. Spanking the Monkey has become a regular number at Divine Sinners gigs which is frequently requested by fans during their shows.

Thanks to Steve Farrugia, then lead singer of local band Dry Connections, Divine Sinners took part in the Martial Arts Vrs Rock Bands in Aid of Puttinu Cares on 29th January 2012. Steve joined the Sinners for a live rendition of Another Lonely Christmas during this show.

The video to their original song “Such a Lucky Dame” was launched on YouTube on 24th March 2012. Unlike the others thus far, this was a surreal dance video which paid tribute to actresses of the Hollywood “Golden Age” and also paid homage to Luis Bunuel and SalvadorDalì’s “Un Chien Andalou”. On 23rd April 2012, Divine Sinners were guests on Martin Sapiano’s "The Big Show" on Radio 101.

18th May 2012 saw Divine Sinners as guests in Michael Bugeja’s radio show "Rockna" and the following day 19th May 2012, they performed a live set as part of the "Lejliet Lapsi, Notte Gozitana". Divine Sinners played their TV debut on "DJ Vision with Alfie Fabri" on One TV in August 2012.

In order to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the first Maltese musical CD compilation, "Watching the Music", Michael Bugeja released the compilation ROCKNA Live & Unplugged with the Divine Sinners live unplugged performance of "Cactus Rose" being one of those included in this 13 track compilation.

Divine Sinners took part in "NYE in the City" at Independence Square, Victoria Gozo following Winter Moods. 2013 would also start with the Divine Sinners song "Bipolar Overdrive" being voted "Top Online Release 2012" in the "Muzika Mod Iehor ma’ Toni Sant" poll. This was followed by Divine Sinners being guests on "The Cottonera Rock Show with Lito" where they were the first band to play live on that show. The original songs "The Light in Your Window" and "Miss Julie (Perhaps)" were performed live for the first time on radio during this show.

11th March 2013 saw for the first time the release of a Divine Sinners song in Maltese entitled "Jekk Tfakkarni Ismek" with music by Frank Buhagiar and lyrics by Charles J. Attard. Another side project was the "Gozo Drum Tribe" release of the song "Sansales" masterminded by Divine Sinners percussionist Eugene Bajada.

The fund raising event – ‘Charity,’ in aid of missionary work undertaken by the Official Voluntary Office Malta, Jesus is Thy Neighbour Movement and Father Joe Camilleri for projects in Guatemala was organized by GUG – Full Moon – Why Not? Official Voluntary Office Malta, Youth for Mission and Jesus is Thy Neighbour Movement. This event took place on 23rd August 2013 at the Ramla Fields, Gozo and featured MAE, Beyond Return, Charlene Rae and Band, The Run, Inside Plan, Ire Flow and Divine Sinners.

On 5th October 2013, Divine Sinners took part in Notte Bianca, Valletta by performing at the St. James Cavalier Theatre as part of the Notte Bianca activities entitled "Band' Ohra" in which 32 bands performed on 5 different stages around Valletta. The Divine Sinners performance consisted of a 40 minute set of all original songs.

At the time being, Divine Sinners are working on their fourth studio album which since a long time coming and with lots of material written and already half of it readily recorded, promises to be an epic one.

It seems like we might hear more in the future from the group named after an Italian epic poem none of them has ever read.

Divine Sinners would like to thank the following for their help & support -
Mary Doris Attard, Monica Attard, Maria Bajada, Michael Bajada, Michael Bugeja, Margret Buhagiar, Alfie Fabri, Lito Malta, Toni Sant, Martin Sapiano & Jon Lukas Woodenman.
What is an editathon?
The word "editathon" or "edit-a-thon" is a portmanteau of the words "edit" and "marathon".

In this case, "edit" is used in the sense of contributing edits to the M3P wiki.

Attendees
The event is free and open to all but registration before Wednesday 16 October 2013 is required. Registration can be achieved simply by entering your name below.
Outline of activities at this event
Steve Borg provides an overview of where the M3P wiki stands after three years since the official launch. This introduction will be followed by a hands-on Q&A session leading to one-to-one editing assistance on pages and entries of specific interest to each attendee.

He shall then describe how one can create a stub, the reason behind its creation and how to accrue data, either raw through fieldwork or existing through deskwork, how to process it and contribute it to the M3P project.

Another process shall be the adding of categories, the phase of luring further contributors within and out of the existing community of practice, to beef up the written text.

Steve Borg shall display how a page can be amended and updated, have its images uploaded and its links created to keep the browser reading within the pages. He shall also delve on the importance of providing external links to further consolidate the information available.

Beneath his calm, unassuming self, Mark Azzopardi admits he’s always busy, his mind forever juggling some musical idea or other. He is also the man behind Draugul, the music project whose debut album The Voyager was released just over a year ago. Originally intended to be a low-key self-released album to give away to a few friends, the album was picked up by German label Pesttanz Klangschmiede, who proceeded to give it an international distribution. “It was certainly a pleasant surprise when the label got in touch with the good news”, he recalls. It was an even bigger surprise that all the copies of the album sold out, some ending up in the hands of metalheads as far as South America.

“The label got in touch to ask if I wanted to do a rerun”, Azzopardi continues, “but by that time I had already finished the second album”. Tales of loot and plunder is in fact the reason I’m meeting Azzopardi. He points out that this second instalment of Draugul’s metal music isn’t exactly a sequel to The Voyager. “That album which was inspired by a mixture of Viking mythology and Tolkien’s work, while the new one is based on real-life Viking raids, but there is a small connection nonetheless”. This is by way of the songs Furore Normanorum, which features on both albums. “The song is about the earliest-recorded Viking raid in history and given the new album chronicles raids carried out by the Vikings between 793 and 1066, I couldn’t exactly leave out the first one”. The ‘II’ prefix behind the song does however suggest there’s a difference. “Yes of course, I re-recorded it from scratch and changed the lyrics”.

Being quite fanatic about Viking history and Norse mythology, Azzopardi says it wasn’t too difficult to pick the particular raids that inspired the music, although some research was still necessary to get all the facts right. And having gotten more familiar with his home-recording studio set-up, he feels the production this time is far better than his first attempt. “I’ve had time to experiment more with the software”, he laughs, “and in doing so I’ve discovered some nifty tricks to get a better sound overall”. This is particularly evident in the sharper, crisper production that characterizes the new songs. Azzopardi is quick to add that apart from Hellcommander Vargblod (his alias within the Draugul project) the album also features four guest vocalists. “I wanted certain parts to stand out in particular, and felt that having other vocalists on board would emphasize certain contrasts”. The vocalists are Clint Aquilina (formerly of Putrid Birth), Alexia Baldacchino (Memento Nostri), Vanja Obscure (Martyrium) and Azzopardi’s wife Katia, who was previously in the local band Shadowborne.

Just like The Voyager before it, Tales of loot and plunder also features a cover. “The last song, King of a stellar war, is originally by Rotting Christ, a band I’ve always admired, and when they played in Malta last summer, I took the opportunity of getting their go-ahead”. I suspect that the inclusion of a cover as the album’s closing track could well become a Draugul tradition. He laughs, saying only that most people love a cover, especially if an artist gives it his own twist and timbre. Having said that, he also strives to keep searching for new ways to develop his sound, and this is reflected in the subtle nuances that add a different flavour to a few of the songs on the new album. “Yes, just because the genre is metal it doesn’t mean one cannot explore other elements too; in fact three of the songs on the album feature flutes and another song features bagpipes”.

Aside from Draugul, Azzopardi has also launched yet another project that literally appeared out of nowhere. “I wasn’t planning another project”, he laughs, “as Draugul keeps me occupied enough, but I was coming up with some riffs and melodies that I didn’t feel suited to what I was doing, but at the same time they were too good to discard”. The solution of course, was simple – he set up Khaospath, which in contrast to Draugul’s Viking metal, is rooted in the more extreme Black Metal genre. “They are totally separate and totally different projects”, he continues. “Khaospath has given me the opportunity to revisit the traditional, raw edge of Black metal”.

And just as his first YouTube uploads of Draugul material caught people’s attention and landed him a record deal his initial Khaospath shares have also been just as well-received. “I’ve had very good feedback so far, and better still my label has also stepped in to release the Khaospath album”. With the second Draugul album now done and dusted, I’m curious as to what Azzopardi will be doing next. “Well, there is the vinyl version of the album still to be released, but other than that, my main focus for the rest of this year will be on Khaospath”. With a handful of tracks already finished for the new album, he admits there’s still a lot of work to be done. “I still need to finalize the rest of the album by the end of the summer in preparation for its release and after that there’s promotion work to do too”. I assume this won’t leave much time for other music, to which he raises his eyebrows and gives me a quizzical look that I take to mean ‘never say never’. “Oh, by the way” he remembers to inform me as we part ways, “the Khaospath album will be called Synagoga Obscura and…it’s going to feature a cover”. He laughs, knowing full well what I’m thinking. Old habits die hard, or in this case, not at all.

This text is taken from a Facebook post by Ray Schembri, Il-Bahri.
