Matina

Early career

Coming from a musical family, it was natural for her as a young girl to take up piano lessons under the tuition of her own father, brass virtuoso Paul Borg.

She also took Ballet and Jazz Dance Lessons, however singing was always her true passion. At the age of 14, she took up her vocal studies with Joshua Alamu, a UK-based vocal coach and instructor.

Martina's debut was with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra during the Orchestra Goes Pop concert, what eventually became the Rockestra. {in which year?}

She later was the resident female singer during a weekly programme on the National Maltese TV Channel. {in which one? and which channel?} Following this, she was constantly invited to sing or be interviewed on various TV channels and programmes.

Before setting off to London, Martina was the resident singer within her father's big band, the Versatile Brass. Together they performed during high profile gigs for the President of Malta, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, and at the Vatican City for Pope Benedict XVI, to name but a few such occasions.

Life in London

When she was 17, she moved to London to further her studies at the ACM (Academy of Contemporary Music), in Guildford. A year later, she achieved a Higher Diploma in Vocals, and later also read her Vocal Degree within the same ACM.

She has worked in collaboration with Tenishia, and other DJs from the Ministry of Sound in the UK.

While in the UK, she started developing her songwriting and carried on improving her piano skills. In 2012 she became the main vocalist with a number of function bands.

Rise

In 2013, she made London her home and professional base signing up to the new independent UK label Coast Music.

Her debut release under this name appeared in December 2013. Rise is a house song by Youngheart featuring her voice. It was released on the Coast Music label. On 13 February 2014 the song entered the top 30 on the UK's Upfront Club Charts. The following week it climbed to number 2 on the same chart.

With remixes by dance aces, Hoxton Whores, the track’s sultry groove and soaring vocal have received widespread support from UK and international DJs like Tim Cullen at Ministry, Erick Morrilo, Brandon Block, Tiesto, Mikey Gallagher and BTraits (BBC Radio 1).

The pop version of the track will be released on 10 March 2014, supported by video and radio promotion and coinciding with Matina’s four-week club and schools’ tour

Her follow-up single is due in spring 2014, with an album being launched later this year.
