Sarah Bonnici

Sarah Bonnici was born on 30 May, 1998. and lives at Xewkija, Gozo. She was crazy about music from a very young age. When she was 9 years old she attended vocal lessons with Miriam Christine (winner of Malta song for Europe 1996), and joined the Gozo Children’s Choir. It was Miriam Christine who encouraged Sarah to participate for the first time in a local singing competition where she placed 1st in her category. For Sarah this was her first step in her carrier.

From there she participated with great success in various singing festivals both locally and abroad. She was also chosen to represent Malta in several international competitions, amongst which Trixie Festival (Bulgaria) where she placed 2nd, Carpathians Star Festival (Romania) where she was awarded with a Honorable Diploma and Star to Born Festival (Hungary) where she came in the 1st place. She was also chosen to represent Malta at the popular Ti Amo Festival in Romania, where she placed 1st in her category and achieved 1st prize at the Original Song Category with the song Vivra Ancora, composed by George Debono to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi. During this time she attended vocal lessons with Geordie Debono.

Locally, Sarah participated in various song festivals and enjoyed a lot of success through them. She came 1st and won The Best Voice award in both editions of the L-Għanja tal-Maltin Singing Festival in 2010 and 2011 and has been awarded the Singer of the Year 2011. In 2010 she was selected as a choir member in the concert of the internationally known tenor Joseph Calleja together with Dionne Warwick and Riccardo Cocciante.

Sarah participated in the finals of the Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest (JESC) in 2009 The Mambo Song and 2010 Kitty-Kitty Cat, where she came in the 3rd place in 2009 with her song The Mambo Song. In 2010, Sarah was chosen to join Nicole Azzopardi (winner of Malta Junior Eurosong 2010) to represent Malta at the Junior Eurosong Contest held in Minsk, Belarus. She was one of the dancers and backing vocalist of the song Knock Knock!..Boom! Boom!. During this time she attended vocal lessons with Glen Vella (winner Malta song for Europe 2011).

Sarah was also selected to perform live at the Music for Life Concert by Ira Losco in aid of children diagnosed with cancer and anti-bullying campaign in aid of Puttinu Cares. Ira Losco (placed second in the Eurovision Song Contest when representing Malta in 2002) offered the chance to some children to perform live while experiencing a professional stage set-up before Ira and her band take the stage, and Sarah was chosen to play live her song The Mambo Song in front an audience of 5000 school children. This concert was held at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali, May 2011.

Her local success includes also an outstanding performance in 2012 at the popular Maltese Festival Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza KKI Junior (teenage category), where she placed 1st with the song Bil-Bnadar f’Idejna, composed by Miriam Christine to the lyrics of Joe Chircop.

Sarah also participated in various local TV shows, radio programmes and took part as a leading role in many school shows, activities and musicals including, Padre Pio, Marcellino Pane Vino, Imħabba ta’ Veru, Anne of Green Gables (playing the part of Gilbert Blythe) and the original musical Dun Ġorġ il-Musical, music by Francesco Grech, written and directed by Mark Laurence Zammit.

Sarah is the vocalist of Brass Tubes Band, directed by Mro. Mark Gauci. She enjoys performing regularly with the Band throughout Malta and Gozo at weddings, functions and events a varied repertoire stretching from Jazz, Swing, Ragtime, Blues, Pop, Rock and Film music. Apart from Brass Tubes Band, she also enjoys performing with singer and guitarist Keith Anthony (ex Chasing Pandora) in pubs and other functions.

Currently taught by Pamela Bezzina at VocalBooth Studios, Sarah has been slowly rising to the top of the local music scene, having had the opportunity to join a team of backing vocalists during the Summer Hit Song Contest 2015, L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015 and the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2014, with Joseph Refalo, Teddie Zammit and Michela Galea respectively.

These experiences set her up to try and enter a competition as a main solo singer, one in which she succeeded having beautifully performed the song Bandwagon, composed by the aforementioned Pamela Bezzina, and penned by Emil Calleja Bayliss. The song is not only a competing entry but also a radio hit, having climbed up to number 7 on Malta’s Top Ten on 89.7 Bay. At the 2016 Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Sarah Bonnici joined Maxine Pace as one of the three backing vocalists during Young Love, a song which finished in 5th place.

Apart from singing, Sarah likes dancing. She has been professionally training for the past twelve years at YADA. She currently studies Jazz Dance, Hip Hop and Classical Ballet. She has taken part in numerous YADA Dance Academy Gozo and The YADA Dance Company's regular shows such as 25 A Filigree of Dance, Michael Jackson Forever, Dance Rush, Divas amongst others. Her personal highlights include being awarded two scholarships, AMICI Scholarship Awards in Jazz Dance, one was held in Malta and the other one in Rome, Italy.

During her free time, apart from singing and dancing Sarah enjoys playing the piano. In May 2014, she sat for the Music Matsec Exam (O Level) in Theory and Piano Practical and obtained a GRADE1 (A) Certificate.

Sarah is a lively girl with a very outgoing personality. Her bubbly character and radiant smile makes Sarah very popular among her peers and a loved person by anyone who meets her.

In 2016, Sarah Bonnici reached the final of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2016 with the song Pass Pass composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas with lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss.

On 19 September, 2017 Sarah taken part in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2017 with the song Fil-Qrib lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss and music by Mark Spiteri Lucas.

On 18 September, 2018 Sarah taken part in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2018 with the song Il-Pinna lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss and music by Sarah herself and Mark Laurence Zammit and win this edition.
