Joe Julian Farrugia (born 9 April 1962) is a Maltese writer, songwriter and broadcaster.
Early Life
He is the youngest of four siblings, the only son of Francis and Beatrix. After attending St. Paul's Missionary College, he won the Anna Muscat Azzopardi prize in the Maltese language from the University of Malta in 1979.
Writing and Songwriting
Joe Julian had been writing poems since his childhood. He went public with his works in 1992, encouraged by Prof Oliver Friggieri. He published poems in local papers and on radio until he started to write song lyrics.
He took part in many song contests and won a placing in most of them. In 1995 he won the best lyricist award in Għarb Song Festival with Għajn ta' Sliem and the same award in L-Għanja tal-Poplu 1999 with Faraġ ta' Xejn. Locally he won several song contests including Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2005 with Ix-Xemx mill-Ġdid and first place in Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija 2013 with Hawn Mill-Ġdid. Apart from local festivals, Joe Julian represented Malta in a number of finternational song contests. Among other awards, he won first place in the Discovery International Pop Music Festival of Varna, Bulgaria twice with songs Endlessly (2003) and Time for Love (2006). He also won the Ti Amo song festival for young singers of Romania five times with songs in the Italian Language.
In 1999 his song Jekk Għada ma Jisbaħx was chosen by American Airlines to be played whenever any passenger requested music from Malta. In 2005, his song Life is a Train was released by NBT Records (U.S.) in a compilation disc sold in three continents. In 2008 his song You're Magic reached the Bulgarian final to select their national Eurovision Song Contest entry.
He also wrote the official football anthems for Balzan FC, Tarxien Rainbows FC and Gudja United FC. He is also popular for his festa anthems, mostly for Ħal Għaxaq, iż-Żurrieq, Mosta, Ħal Balzan, Paola, Ħal Tarxien, Birżebbuġa, l-Imġarr, Gwardamangia, San Pawl il-Baħar, Żejtun, L-Imġarr and Birkirkara.
Joe Julian also pens drama for both theatre and television. He also wrote two Musicals, three Christmas Pantomines and other plays for the theatre. His televised drama works include local popular sitcom Simpatiċi, Mhux Malta, Il-Prinċipal and XplaħħMalħajt. He used to write regular articles for a Sunday paper and local magazines. Qaħba Jien? is the name of a theatrical monologue he wrote and produced and was performed at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in November 2017 by actress Sarah Camilleri.
He wrote the lyrics for Elfejn u Tmintax, a 20 minute choral symphony, which was performed by a choir of more than 100 singers on the steps of St John's Co-Cathedral on the 20 January 2018 during the official opening ceremony making Valletta the European Capital City for Culture for 2018.

Broadcasting
Joe Julian is also a broadcaster. He started on One Radio with programme Il-Ħadd mas-Sebħ. When One TV started its broadcasts, he was asked to move to television and eventually wrote and produced television programmes including Dr. Peel, Menz, Xalamita, Is-Saħħa Sabiħa, Indigo and Medik. He wrote, produced and directed the majority of episodes for popular television documentary series Bijografiji for TVM and was also part of Xarabank's production team where he produced several features for the programme.
Late in 2013, Joe Julian returned to his first love: radio. He produced and presented radio programmes Aniżett, Bonġu Kafé ma' Joe Julian and Għamlu Isem on national radio station Radju Malta.
Għamlu Isem is also the name of three books (2015, 2016 and 2017) written by Joe Julian with 40 biographies each, published by Klabb Kotba Maltin.
Joe Julian wrote a 90 minute docu-history of One Radio's first 25 years of history. He wrote and produced the series MPO Protagonists with biographies on past Malta Philharmonic Orchestra musicians. He also wrote the script for local docu-film Kenn Niesna, the World War II story about the relation between a Maltese family and underwater wrecks. The film was premiered on 21 June 2017 at the Old Naval Cinema in St Angelo.
Joe Julian won three awards in broadcasting from the Institute of Maltese Journalists.
Family
Joe Julian is married to Marlene. They have two daughters, Clara Farrugia and Valentina Farrugia.
